The Latin Quarter, one of the most revered and respected jazz groups in Central
Connecticut, was founded by Bob "Mr. Sax" Paskowitz at the Cafe 880 Jazz, Hartford,
CT in 1998. Paskowitz has studied with Jackie McLean, Dave Liebman and Donald
Sinta, has performed at the Litchfield, CT Jazz Festival and collaborated on a live CD
with Anthony Braxton that was recorded in Greenwich Village, NYC. Also featured
in the Latin Quarter are veteran session guitarist Jeff Wallace, vocalist and guitarist
Judy Simonds, multi-instrumentalist and composer
Tom Parker on basses and drums
(who also works with the Berskshire Samba Group from Great Barrington, Mass.),
talented up-and-comer
Jason Schwartz on standup bass, the legendary Woody Floyd
on drums, who has played with some of the top people in the music industry like
George Clinton, Jimmy McGriff and George Benson, and from the Torrington, CT
area, John Niel, and John's wife, Karen Hughes-Niel from Trinidad and Tobago, on
congas and percussion.
Our ensemble has
appeared in the
Hartford Advocate
Grand Band Slam and
has played for CT's top
political dignitaries at
the Learning Corridor in
Hartford, CT. The band
recently performed in
the 2004 summer concert
series for the Parks and
Recreation Department
of the City of New
Britain, CT.
LQ performs some of the greatest Latin jazz classics, including "Manha de Carnaval
(Black Orpheus)" by Luis Bonfa, which is also the title track of our first CD,
recorded in February 2003. Another of our favorites is "Blue Bossa", composed by
the prolific trumpeter of the bebop era, Kenny Dorham, which appears on the Latin
Quarter's "Caribbean Holiday" CD that was recorded in December 2003 with
special guests
Warren Byrd on keyboard and Holland's Saskia Laroo on trumpet.
Other tunes the Latin Quarter performs include pianist Horace Silver's "Song for
My Father" and "Nica's Dream", Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" and
"Cantaloupe Island", and Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va". LQ's dynamic repertoire of
Latin jazz songs includes many of Brazilian bossa-nova king Antonio Carlos
Jobim's classic compositions, such as "Corcovado (Quiet Nights, Quiet Stars)",
"Triste", "One Note Samba", "Se Danco Samba", "Wave", "Desafinado", "Favela" and
the well-known top ten hit "The Girl from Ipanema".
